Golfers of all abilities gathered Monday morning at the Hidden Valley Country Club to support the annual Gail Miller Utah Leadership Cup.

The tournament serves as a fundraiser to gather donations for Salt Lake Community College athletic scholarships. The players joined school officials, alumni and celebrities for 18 holes of fun.

The fundraiser was deemed a success, with money raised totaling around $260,000. Compared to last year, twice as many teams and over 50 more golfers participated in the tournament.

During lunch, tournament host Gail Miller thanked the donors for their generosity.

“What you have done here today is much more than just a game of golf, you have helped SLCC accomplish their mission statement. Whether you had a bad game today or not, you have done so much more. We thank you for the sharing of your time, talents and resources.”

SLCC administrators are also pleased with the end result and plan to build on the positive energy.

“We hope to raise more than we ever have,” says SLCC public relations director Joy Tlou. “[The scholarships] can be given to students who are in need of money.”

The tournament format allowed for maximum participation, as each team member took turns hitting drives and alternating swings. The positive atmosphere left all competitors smiling at the end of their round.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity,” says golfer and credit union employee Brian Pitt. “It’s a great tournament and it’s nice to get away from work for a day and support a good cause.”
