It’s time for Salt Lake Community College students to show off their school spirit for a spot on the 2016-17 cheerleading squad.
SLCC will hold cheer tryouts for Brutus the Bruin and other positions May 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Lifetime Activities Center at Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
Cheerleading is a part of Student Life and Leadership and gives members the opportunity to be SLCC ambassadors by supporting the athletics program and other college initiatives.
Squad members are eligible for a half-tuition waiver for both fall and spring semesters, while the mascot is eligible for a three-quarters or a full tuition waiver, depending on responsibilities.
Requirements
Cheerleaders are required to participate in all home games and assigned away games for volleyball and basketball, in addition to fundraisers. The squad may also compete nationally in Anaheim, California.
Squad members must maintain nine credit hours with a semester and cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better.
Anyone who wishes to participate in the tryout must first fill out an application and pay a $20 fee.
Stunt clinics
Students who want to try out are encouraged to attend stunt clinics. The clinics give students an idea of what to expect at the audition and allow students to practice with their peers and network with coaches.
Upcoming clinics will take place April 6 and 18 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and cost $5 apiece.
