SLL helps club leaders feel like superheroes

Salt Lake Community College student leaders heard a resounding message at the “Super Leaders” Leadership Conference on Nov. 13.

According to keynote speaker Curtis Larsen, student club presidents are super heroes because they help other students in many ways every day.

“[Sometimes] do you just feel like wearing your underwear on the outside and adding a cape?” he says as the audience breaks into laughter.

Student Life and Leadership officers transformed the Student Event Center into the likeness of a Batman film set. With dozens of club leaders in attendance, the event included several breakout sessions on streamlining club functions such as financing and service leadership.

“[This conference is] amazing,” says Student Body President Carlos Moreno, who brought his young Superman son, Carlos Isaih. “The student leaders have opportunities to improve their leadership skills.”

SLL vice president Ana Brown conducted the main sessions, and club liaisons echoed the enthusiasm with cheers and fancy dance moves.

Sports Rally Club president Jesse Valdez says the conference is both fun and helpful.

“It makes participants more aware [of club resources] and [how they apply] to the goals of their clubs,” Valdez explains.

Any SLCC students may start or join an interest-based club. For more information, contact SLL club advisor Joan Christiansen at 801-957-4015.
