Salt Lake Community College has expanded its tutoring program through a new online platform.
The Tutoring & Leaning Centers provide online tutoring via video or text chats for Math 900 through Math 1210. Biology tutoring is also being offered this semester.
“It just really makes tutoring accessible to everybody,” says Learning Center coordinator Lori Reagan.
The technology allows students to connect with a qualified tutor at a convenient time and place for them. The tutors also work in person at the different tutoring labs on campus.
“It’s great for students because they will be familiar with the tutors they might already know from the Learning Center,” Reagan says.
Online students will also find this format helpful because of the face-to-face interaction with a tutor that can’t be replicated through video lessons.
Tutoring is also available in biology. The pilot program launched this semester and became fully operational last month.
“Online tutoring is great because it offers the students that are home a chance to just pop in and ask questions,” says tutor Evelynn van den Akker. “[Students] don’t have to drive down to the Learning Center [for help].”
SLCC uses Google Hangouts for its online tutoring. Students need their BruinMail ID or a Gmail address to access the platform.
Online tutoring is available Mondays from noon to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
