Salt Lake Community College professor Rob Adamson recently received an honorable mention at the Carmel-by-the-Sea plein air painting competition in California.

Adamson, who has taught Visual Art and Design courses at SLCC since 1994, earned the award for his painting titled “Angel Landing.”

The competition, part of the Carmel Art Festival, invites a handful of respectable artists from around the world to display their skills. Artists have two days on site to complete original paintings in various locations on the Monterey Peninsula.

“The term ‘plein air’ is a French term meaning ‘in open air,’” says Adamson. “There was no photography allowed.”

Adamson, who has also competed in Utah plein air events, finished two paintings at the event and sold both pieces at the exhibit. Half of the proceeds will benefit the Carmel Art Association’s children’s art program.

SLCC students will be able to take advantage of Adamson’s award-winning tutelage next semester.

He will teach five courses in the fall: Beginning and Advanced Oil Painting (ART 1540 and 2540, respectively), Portrait Oil Painting (ART 1560), Advanced Drawing (ART 2520) and the Foundation Seminar (ART 1150). Students can register for these courses through MyPage.
