It was a Saturday home sweep in the regular-season finale for Salt Lake Community College, as the Bruins defeated North Idaho College in men’s and women’s basketball.
The No. 6-ranked women’s team (25-5, 13-2 Scenic West Athletic Conference) defeated the Cardinals (18-12, 6-9) in the early game at Bruin Arena, 62-53.
Cassidy Whitney had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Raushan Gultekin led the Bruins in scoring with 15 points.
Salt Lake earned a big advantage at the free throw line, converting 20 of 30 free throws compared to just 5 of 13 for NIC.
The Bruins enter the Region 18 Tournament as the number one seed. The tournament will be played at USU Eastern in Price, Utah from Feb. 26-28.
The SLCC men’s basketball team (25-5, 13-2 SWAC) took care of NIC (21-7, 9-6) in the late game, 82-78.
Salt Lake’s LaBrian Shiflet led all scorers with 21 points. Shiflet shot 6 for 8 from the field, including 5 of 6 from 3-point range.
The Bruins led by 11 at halftime, but NIC countered with a 19-6 run to start the second half to lead 51-48. Two baskets by Shiflet, including a 3-pointer with 12:33 left in the half, put the Bruins up 53-51; Salt Lake held the lead through the rest of the game.
With the win, SLCC earns SWAC co-champion status and enters the Region 18 Tournament as the number two seed. Tournament action takes place Feb. 26-28 in Price, Utah.
SLCC splits 4-game SWAC Tournament slate in Henderson
The Bruins went 2-2 in the regular-season SWAC Tournament in Henderson, Nev.
Salt Lake dominated Colorado Northwestern 11-3 on Thursday and defeated USU Eastern 3-1 on Friday morning. On Friday afternoon, the Bruins lost to Western Nevada 4-1 on Friday afternoon and Southern Idaho 3-2 on Saturday.
Salt Lake is now 9-6 on the season. The Bruins upcoming matchup is a home-and-home series vs. USU Eastern. SLCC travels to Price for two games on Feb. 25 and returns to Cate Field for a double-header on Feb. 27.
