What carpenters do with wood and what painters do with canvas and paints, US Foods does with soda. Introducing Craft Artisan Soda from US Foods, coming to a campus cafeteria near you.
With the ongoing battle against obesity in recent years, more and more people are looking for healthier, more natural ingredients in their foods that stray away from unhealthy additives and preservatives.
Due to an increasing percentage of the population becoming more health-conscious, sales for soda companies have been declining in the past 10 years. Total sales in the U.S. fell three percent in 2013 to 8.9 billion cases, which resulted in the ninth straight year of decline and lowest since 1995.
Even with diet sodas that pleased the consumer looking for a lower calorie soft drink for decades, they too are made with chemicals than have been linked with long-term health problems such as aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose.
‘Craft’ is brewed with natural ingredients, like cane sugar, to deliver a healthier soft drink without sacrificing the flavor that once only seemed available from artificial preservatives.
US Foods, the second largest food service business in the country, looked to hit the nail right on the head by carefully crafting this ideal beverage.
Thus, Craft Artisan Sodas came to be. Served in vintage brown bottles that are reminiscent of 50’s soda shops.
“Scoop is our own internal event for US Foods, and every quarter we come out with 15 new items and it’s anything from sauces, wings, meats, chips. A lot of it is pre-made appetizers and stuff that’s new and innovative for us to show our customers for them to check out,” said Gordon Daniels and Dan Davis, sales representatives of US Foods that were serving samples to student passersby last Thursday. “These sodas are the top-selling items this quarter. Most of our customers are mom and pop restaurants and local restaurant type people.”
There are three flavors available: Root Beer, Spicy Ginger Beer, and Mexican Coke. Due to current high demand on the sales of sodas, more flavors are bound to be revealed.
The Root Beer is spiced with a delicious elixir of vanilla, anise, sweet birch, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
The Spicy Ginger Beer bubbles with nutmeg and allspice that lingers to the end to deliver a little heat.
The Mexican Cola is brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and even hinted with lemon and lime.
Craft Artisan Sodas will soon be sold in SLCC cafeterias soon for $1.99 each.
Glad to see craft sodas making their way in! 🙂
