Four simple ways to reduce stress

Jogging
Going on a short jog can really get your mind off the stresses of your daily life.

Stress is part of everyday life, especially when you are a college student. There are, however, a few things that can be done to get rid of stress when it comes to health. Here are a few examples that one can do to relieve their stresses.

Cardio

Cardio exercise is always a great way to workout. Cardio helps improve your health by improving the overall conditioning of muscles as well as your heart and lungs. Going on a short jog can really get your mind off the stresses of your daily life. With college, work and personal issues always consuming every part of our thought process, it isn’t such a bad idea to take a short jog if it means that it will bring a little peace of mind.

Weight lifting

Weight lifting is a great way to release stress because it puts a heavier strain on muscles, which in turn helps the body to produce endorphins faster. Endorphins are also known as the “feel good” hormone. Good exercises when lifting weights are squats, bench press, and free weights.

A common misconception for women is that they will become extremely muscular and husky when lifting weights. This is not true; it is actually the opposite because women do not produce as much testosterone as men. Women who implement weights into their workout routine with consistency actually see that they become toned a lot quicker than women who do strictly cardio.

Play a sport

Whether it is a club team, joining the local Jiu-Jitsu gym, or meeting up twice a week at the local gym to run the basketball court, playing a sport helps relieve stress because it provides the opportunity to be social and to develop relationships in a team atmosphere. Spiritual health

Spiritual health is essential in the relief and reduction of stress. One great way of implementing spiritual health is by simply serving others. There is so much that this simple act can do to one who consistently seeks to be more charitable. Whether it is helping a senior citizen neighbor mow their lawn or going down to the homeless shelter to help out in any way, it makes all the difference. When you are helping others, you realize and appreciate the good things going on in your life.

By focusing on the positive things, you forget about the negative things that bring you stress. Spiritual health can truly bring you a sense of relief from your daily stresses.  The Thayne Center for Service & Learning provides opportunities for SLCC students to participate in service projects in the community.
