With the series finale all wrapped up as Head Coach DG Nelson and the rest of the SWAC leading Salt Lake Community College baseball team (34-16, 22-10 SWAC) will enjoy a week of no play as they prepared for the upcoming Region 18 Baseball Tournament held May 7-10.
The Bruins hold a slim lead over Western Nevada College in the conference standings, with a key series coming up in the SWAC conference the Bruins will be following WNC trip to Twin Falls, ID as they take on the College of Southern Idaho May 2-3 to find out if SLCC will indeed host the Region 18 Baseball Tournament.
After a rough series loss this past weekend to CSI three games to one, the Bruins remain atop the SWAC standing.
A conference championship for SLCC will be their second conference crown in three years.
The SLCC baseball as a team is hitting .290 overall. Sophomore outfielder Zach Watts, who had a solid weekend, jumped his season average to .360 including an impressive .616 slugging percentage. Highlighted by a game one home run, sophomore infielder Derrick Whitney is hitting .348.
The SLCC pitching staff maintained their overall earned run average (ERA) of 3.35. Freshman starter Jason Jourdan posted a phenomenal start Thursday, April 24 with a complete game two hitter earning his team leading eighth win.
