Salt Lake Community College is on their way to the National Tournament after their blowout win 75-59 on Saturday, March 8, against the No. 22 Mesa Community College.
The District I playoff game win sends the Bruins to Hutchinson, KS (Mar. 17-22) for the second consecutive year to play for the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship.
“Everybody, as a team, has to be one the same page, and we got to win it,” said sophomore guard Gary Payton II before Saturday’s game. Payton II scored 18 points and pulled down 13 boards to give him the double-double on the night.
Freshman forward Neal Monson dropped 18 points, Jaden Jackson added 14 points, and Collin Woods was feeling it from long range as he was 3-for-4 from the three point line and turned in 11 points on the night.
The Bruins defense held MCC, who is the fifth best three point shooting team in the nation, to only 5 three pointers on a night when they attempted 22 of them.
Head coach Todd Phillips and his team will now wait for their call for the final seeding for the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship that will be released on either Sunday evening or Monday; that is when the Bruins will find out where they land in the tournament where they will begin their quest to bring home the championship trophy to Bruin Arena.
