Salt Lake Community College was back on the diamond in Henderson, NV, on Feb. 22, and freshmen pitcher Jason Jourdan pitched seven and one third innings with four strike outs and only allowing two runs after allowing no runs in the first six innings to help the Bruins defeat the No. 14 ranked Western Nevada College (WNC) 4-3.
Sophomore pitcher Eric Carter came into the game to close things out; he earned the save with one strike out in a scoreless ninth inning of pitching.
SLCC out-hit WNC 7-4. Both teams committed one error in the ball game; the WNC Wildcats had a runner in scoring position with two outs in the top of the ninth inning. Sophomore catcher Colton Barkdull picked the runner off during an attempted stolen base for the third out and the Bruins’ victory.
The Bruins’ bats were a key part to their win as freshmen outfielder Caleb Summerhays went 2-for-4 with a double that scored two runs in the first inning; freshmen catcher Zach Willis was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
The Bruins victory comes in the Scenic West Athletic Conference Preseason Tournament, and Head Coach DG Nelson will have the Bruins ready to close out the SWAC Preseason Tournament against College of Southern Nevada on Saturday. Feb. 22 in Henderson, NV with first pitch scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
