SLCC softball beats Weatherford, faces Chipola College in next round

ST. GEORGE, UT – No. 2 seed Salt Lake Community College (50-9) advances to the third round of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Softball Championship after defeating 10th-seeded Weatherford College (49-7) 10-2 in five innings on Thursday, May 16.

The Bruins made use of the eight-run rule for the second consecutive game, a day after beating first-round opponent Georgia Perimeter College 9-1 in five innings.

The Coyotes scored a run in each of the first two innings, but Salt Lake surged ahead in the second inning with a two-run double from Hannah Williams. Shortstop Maddy Woodard went 3-4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, and Malia Campos scored three times.

MaCauley Flint picked up the win for the Bruins, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out eight.

SLCC’s next opponent is No. 3 seed Chipola College (45-9). The Region 8B champions defeated Odessa College and Lake Land College in their first two tournament games. Stephanie Garrels leads the Indians in hits and stolen bases, while Mya Anderson provides the power, leading the team in home runs and RBIs.

The Bruins and the Indians will take the field Friday, May 17 at 2:30 p.m. Fans can listen to live game coverage on NJCAA-TV.
