Looking forward to the new year

It’s back. Despite the troubles that school occasionally brings, new and returning students are looking forward to the 2011-2012 school year. The reasons vary depending on the student, but whatever they may be, most are looking forward to the new experiences that lay ahead. As far as the classroom itself is concerned, although some are not sure what to take, some are very focused as to what they are going to Salt Lake Community College for.

For new students who have just graduated from high school, going to Salt Lake Community College can be exciting, but can also be a little scary because of the newness of going to college.

Nicholas Cooper is a new student studying bio-technology. “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, learning new things and having some fun,” he said.

Ashley Jenkins is a first year nursing student. She is excited to start the new school year.

“I’m looking forward to just going to school and working toward a nursing career. I think I’ll have fun. I took a Zumba class and a human development class that I’m looking forward to,” Jenkins said.

Kiana Shaffer is a new student from Boise, Idaho. She will be studying American Sign Language and interpreting.

“I’m looking forward to the new area and people and to the fun activities at the school,” Shaffer said.

For returning students, the things to look forward to range from experiencing new classes to finishing up at SLCC and moving on.

“I’m looking forward to not drinking as much as I did during the summer,” Tommy Thornburgh, communication student said. “This is my last semester and I’m looking forward to finishing up.”

Stoney Fonua is a criminal justice student who is looking forward to getting his bachelor’s degree.  “I’m looking forward to finishing. I just came back to finish,” Fonua said.

Some other students who had too much time during the summer are looking forward to classes beginning.

Kali Sadler is a psychology student who said, “I’m looking forward to having something to do with my time.”

Some other students are just focused on finishing, such as Casandra Vanfleet who said, “I just want to finish up my associates and finish quickly and to have it be a good experience.”

There are employees at SLCC that are also looking forward to the new year. Because of the new year most are very busy getting ready.

Ben Booth works at Cashier Express at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. He graduated from Salt Lake Community College two years ago.

“I just got full time and I’m excited to be here full time. SLCC offers good jobs,” Booth said. “I like helping the students because I used to be in their shoes.

“I’m always looking forward to school and having the students here, new and returning,” Linda Bennett, Disability Resource Center Office Manager said.

For as many different reasons as there are students and staff to be looking forward to the new school year, it seems that there is a positive atmosphere at the school as we begin the new semester.
