The Thayne Center for Service & Learning has multiple jobs available for Salt Lake Community College students who want to create social change in their communities.
The center is currently accepting applications for Student Leaders in Civic Engagement, or SLiCE. These student staff positions offer financial awards and stipends, and provide an opportunity for students to gain experience through community service projects.
As a result of organizational changes for the upcoming academic year, SLiCE members will have greater responsibilities than typical student volunteers. According to Thayne Center service leadership coordinator Brandon Devlin, these positions will create a middle layer between staff and student participants.
Devlin also says the changes will allow SLiCE students to take ownership over program initiatives and create goals beyond the scope of volunteering.
Duties and responsibilities
SLiCE members develop leadership skills through a yearlong position tailored to each student’s interests in community engagement. Students get to network with nonprofit organizations and make a measurable difference in the community.
Each student is expected to meet with other SLiCE members on a weekly basis to attain a collective knowledge of organizational programming goals. The full-year position starts in August and SLiCE members are expected to contribute 15-20 hours a week during fall and spring semesters.
Financial aid and other perks
Students who join SLiCE may receive federal work-study, tuition waivers, a stipend worth as much as $1500, or AmeriCorps education awards. Other incentives include on-campus student employee benefits, free Alternative Break trips and the opportunity to graduate as a Civically Engaged Scholar.
While many of these awards are dependent on student eligibility and position responsibilities, the Thayne Center makes every attempt to secure funding for all SLiCE members.
“We try to make sure that there is some eligibility for financial compensation,” says community work-study coordinator Sam Collins.
Interested students can visit OrgSync to access the SLiCE application and read eligibility requirements. Students have until Friday, April 7 to submit an application.
