The Smithsonian Institute is one of dozens of organizations that offer internships to SLCC students.

Salt Lake Community College offers students a chance to work in the nation’s capital through the Washington D.C. internship program.

Internship coordinator Joan Christiansen recommends that students take advantage of this program because the internship can prepare students for a variety of jobs and looks good on a resume.

“Students may have many choices in Washington … there are lots of fields that students do internships for,” Christiansen says.

SLCC gives students access to internships in government, business, the arts, communications, environmental studies, healthcare and more.

Tim Sheehan, vice president of government and community relations, started the program in the summer of 2012.

At the time, students were only able to apply for summer semester; however, the program was expanded in 2014 to allow students to apply for any semester.

Students usually serve for one semester. After they are done with the internship they either continue their schooling or move on to the workforce.

“Usually, students who apply for the internships are sophomores, so many of them end up finding jobs instead of coming back to school,” says Christensen.

Prior to acceptance into the program, applicants must be interviewed by school officials. Once qualified, students can move forward with the application process.

SLCC provides assistance with housing, a tuition waiver, six hours of elective credits and training for skills that are required to earn the internship.

According to Christiansen, the school gives about $1500 to students for living expenses.
