This past weekend, Salt Lake Community College hosted the 2018 SCDC DECA conference. We were very honored to host this amazing event!
For those who don’t know, collegiate DECA is an international business club made for students who want to gain real life experience and skills.
The skills you learn in DECA can be used for any real-world situation, no matter what your major is. Our job while hosting the DECA state conference was to hire judges to evaluate our individual and team competitions. Many of you may ask, what do these competitions entail?
For the competitions, you or your team are given a case study that places you in a real-life situation where you must solve a problem and complete a goal. These competitions allow students to test their skills that will contribute to their success in their future careers.
On another note, our SLCC students did a great job competing! Our first-place holders include Emma Farr for the advertising campaign and Samuel Omer for fashion merchandising.
Our second-place holders include Derek Whipple for marketing management, Anthony Quach for retail management, and Nhat Nguyen and Derek Whipple as a team for marketing communications.
For our third-place holders, we have Carlin LeFavor for marketing management, as well as Kenzie Ball and Gerson Lucas as a team for international marketing.
Fourth-place winners include Jon Heaton for marketing management, Nick Collins for HR management, and Sharif Orfali for banking and financial statement. Our fifth-place holders are Emma Farr and Bayli Barbosa as a team for marketing communications.
Overall, the state DECA conference was a success! I would like to give a personal thanks to our two SLCC DECA advisors, Lon Schiffbauer and Ahmad Kareh, for hosting and making our DECA chapter a fun and creative learning environment.
We would love for anyone to come and join the awesome DECA chapter at SLCC. DECA gives you the opportunity to explore your interests and gain skills that most people don’t gain until their first real job. DECA is also a great resume builder.
Our meeting times are every Monday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Business Building at Taylorsville Redwood Campus, on the second floor in room 222. Come see what DECA is able to offer you!
