NJCAA: No. 11 seed SLCC holds off ASA College

The No. 11 seed Salt Lake Community College women’s basketball team survived a scare by No. 22 seed ASA College in the opening round of the NJCAA Tournament in Salina, Kan., defeating the Avengers 58-57.

Salt Lake’s Tanesha Daniels made the game-winning shot with two seconds to play. Daniels ended the game with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting and collected 12 rebounds.

The Bruins trailed by as much as seven in the second half before rallying to tie the game at 48 with 7:11 remaining. The final seven minutes included seven lead changes and five ties.

Elsa Paulsson-Glantz led the Bruins in scoring with 14 points, shooting 4-for-12 from 3-point range. Shelby Richards added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

ASA’s Diandra DaRosa led all scorers with 18 points.

Defense was a premium for both teams; the Avengers forced 26 Bruin turnovers, while SLCC held ASA to 18-for-43 shooting and forced 20 turnovers.

With the win, Salt Lake advances to play No. 6 seed Iowa Western on Wednesday at 6 p.m. MDT.
