Sports briefs: Bruins have successful weekend

Volleyball dominates final home matches

The No. 6-ranked Salt Lake Community College women’s volleyball team defeated Colorado Northwestern Community College in straight sets (25-16, 25-9, 25-17) on Oct. 31 and USU Eastern in straight sets (25-14, 25-18, 25-13) on Nov. 1.

The Bruins finish the regular season with a record of 20-8 overall and 8-2 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference. SLCC will play in the Region 18 tournament on Nov. 7 and 8 in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Men’s and women’s basketball win season openers

The SLCC men’s basketball team, ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA poll, opened the 2014-2015 season last weekend with wins over Tohono O’odham Community College (90-74) on Oct. 31 and Glendale Community College (54-48) on Nov. 1 in Tuscon, Arizona. The Bruins continue their Arizona road trip with games at Chandler-Gilbert Community College on Nov. 3 and Scottsdale College on Nov. 4.

The No. 10-ranked Bruin women’s basketball team defeated the Salt Lake All-Stars, 81-56, in their first game of the season on Nov. 1. SLCC’s next game is in Thatcher, Arizona versus Eastern Arizona on Nov. 6.
