This past February, the Mass Communication Department of Salt Lake Community College put on the “14 Days of Love” Facebook sweepstakes. Starting Feb. 11, students were able to enter the contest to win prizes, including SLCC Campus Bookstore gift cards, iTunes gift cards and tickets to University of Utah sporting events.

In addition, students also had the opportunity to enter for the grand prize of two tuition waivers for spring semester. The winners were selected on March 3.

“I heard about the contest through a friend that used to write for the newspaper” says Shanae Tanner, one of the winners of the grand prize. “I was surprised and excited [about winning].”

Tanner is a psychology major and hopes to help children with special needs.

“My ultimate goal is to work with special needs kids,” says Tanner. “I want to focus mostly in the schools and to be able to help them be around other children and function as normally as possible with other children in the school.”

Jessica Smith, the second winner of the tuition waiver, was also surprised when she received the news that she had won.

“No one really thinks that they are going to win a grand prize” says Smith. “I called my friends and my family. Everyone was really excited.”

A surgical technology major, Smith, is thankful that the tuition waiver will help out while she is at SLCC.

“Books and expenses and everything else, it all adds up,” says Smith. “It definitely helps pay [tuition] and makes it a little bit easier.”

Both winners were very appreciative of the waivers that were awarded and will put them to good use.

“I’d really like to thank [the Mass Communication Center] for giving us the opportunity to put our names in for a drawing,” says Tanner. “And for giving me the opportunity to be able to take an extra class during the summer that I wouldn’t have been able to take otherwise.”
