SLCC Talks: Race Card Project

Welcome to SLCC Talks, a feature where The Globe asks fellow Salt Lake Community College students questions about various campus and community issues.

In this edition of SLCC Talks we explore the Race Card Project exhibit currently at SLCC this month, as we ask students questions about race.

This month is black history month.  What does the word race mean to you?

Greg Christiansen, Communication Student

“To me, race [is] what people are.  We have the human race, the canine race, the cat race—different animal races.  Every creature is its own race.  Like, humans—we’re just one race.”

Ali Mohamed

“It can mean a couple of things, like being segregated from one color to the other.”

Brock Rigdon

“I guess it means [the] kind of culture and where you’ve come from and how you’re brought up.”

Shahideh Safi

“It would mean people’s ethnicity, where you grew up – what the culture is like.”

Htet Aung

“Race in my opinion, is like individual things, that you grew up [with] in the culture, in the nations.”
