Softball: Bruins begin season with back to back losses

The No. 16 ranked Bruins softball team fell in their opening day games with two losses on Jan. 31 at the Southern Nevada Kickoff in Henderson, Nev.

Cyndee Bennett made her debut as the Bruins’ head coach against the No. 18 ranked Eastern Arizona (EAC) where the Bruins fell 5-2 to kick off their doubleheader.

Freshman pitcher Courtney Platt started and had one strikeout and four walks in four innings. Freshman Paige Reiman came into the ball game to strike out two EAC batters while giving up four walks. Chelsa Baca finished the game tallying one strikeout.

Freshman first baseman/outfielder Megan Reed had a solid game at the plate where she was 2-for-3 in the loss.

Things didn’t get easier for the Bruins as they faced No.4 ranked Pima Community College (PCC). The Bruins battled hard but fell 7-3.

SLCC Freshman pitcher Baylee Reeves allowed two runs with eight hits and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Baca was on the mound for the second time on the day and allowed one run on five hits with a strikeout in 2.1 innings of relief.

Freshman catcher Riana Splinter went 2-for-2 with the bat in her hand including a homerun.
