Press [Start] to Game Special: Aldo’s year-end review

Over the last 12 months, I’ve gotten to play a lot more games than I usually would, and I’ve also been able to experience the best of the best and some of the worst that gaming has to offer.

Because of that, I present my top three games from 2013 and my three most anticipated games of 2014.

3. ‘Injustice: Gods Among Us’

Injustice was one of those games that catered to a couple of interests of mine: comics and fighting games. Injustice came on the scene with the intent of becoming the next big tournament fighter, something that “Mortal Kombat” was not. The balance was impeccable, each character was unique, and I even ended up investing another $30 in downloadable content.

2. ‘Bioshock Infinite’

I hardly play any shooters and that can be attributed to my preference for single-player campaigns. “Bioshock Infinite” gave gamers just that, one of the greatest single-player campaigns in years. The story was deep, emotional and smart. Elizabeth was one of the better characters in recent years as well.

1. ‘Pokemon X/Y’

This was a no brainer to anyone who knows me. I love Pokémon, and it’s probably one of the biggest reasons I do what I do, which is play video games and then complain about them. This was one of the best games in the series, and it has not left my 3DS since its release.

3. ‘Thief’

This is one of those games that get me due to nostalgia. I played “Thief” back on the PC and most recently on the original Xbox and loved the series. I had originally thought the series was over and never expected it to reboot since I had considered games like “Dishonored” and “Assassin’s Creed” to have taken its place in stealth action.

2. ‘Fable Anniversary’

This is another game that preys on my nostalgia. Not a reboot though, since “Anniversary” is a remake of the 2005 “Fable: The Lost Chapters.” That’s pretty much the only reason I’m excited since I love HD updates and Fable, but not the rest of the series; it went downhill after the first game.

1. ‘Infamous: Second Son’

“Second Son” is a reboot of the two-game franchise “Infamous.” “Second Son” features a brand new protagonist in the world that remains from the first two games. I want to see where the series goes from here and hope that the ability to choose and have a unique run through every time is still intact.
