The No. 17 ranked Salt Lake Community College Bruins (7-1) used a balanced scoring attack, and monster game from freshman Neil Monson, to defeat the Western Wyoming Mustangs (4-4) for a second time this season on Nov. 26, 80-73.
The Bruins were efficient all night on the offensive end, shooting a blistering 54.1% from the field. They out rebounded the Mustangs 38-30 on the night.
Monson chipped in a cool 25 points and 14 rebounds — an impressive stat line for the freshman forward from Sandy, Utah — to lead all players. What is more impressive is he went 9 of 10 on field goals and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Monson added two blocks to help the Bruins to their second straight win.
Fellow freshmen De’Sean Parsons and Zerrion Payton were two of the five Bruins in double figures. Parsons adding 13 points and 7 rebounds and Payton finishing with 11 points. Sophomores Jaden Jackson, 12 points, and Kurtis Toolson, 11 points, were the other Bruins with double digit points.
The last time these two teams met the Bruins defeated the Mustangs at home on Nov. 9, 93-82.
The Bruins return home Nov. 29 to face off against the Utah Pump n’ Run AAU program. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Bruin Arena on Taylorsville Redwood Campus in the LAC.
