The Bruins complete their 4 game sweep at the Pizza Hut Invitational with a 4 set win over the Northeastern JC Plainswomen.
Set One:
After a 1 to 1 tie, the Bruins took the lead and never looked back. Carol Grasso had back to back aces to make the score 16 to 8, and Sequoia Lofton finished the set with a kill to make the score 25 to 17.
Set Two:
The Bruins got out to a 3 to 0 lead, but the Plainswomen were able to tie it at 3 and take the lead at 3 to 6. The Bruins took back the lead on a Grasso hit from the back at 8 to 7, but the Plainswomen tied it up at 8 and again at 9 and 10.From there, the Plainswomen took over and ran the score up to 14 to 20. Grasso and Janessa Koelliker scored 2 of 4 points in a run that got the Bruins to within 2 at 18 to 20, but it wasn’t enough as the Plainswomen took the set over the Bruins with the score 21 to 25.
Set Three:
Both teams had errors at the beginning with the plainswomen taking advantage at 3 to 6. Koelliker’s smart play help the Bruins get to within at 6 to 7, but the Bruins couldn’t tie the score until both teams were at 10. From there, it was back and forth with Grasso and Koelliker scoring key points. Abby Pomrenke’s ace put the Bruins up 17 to 14. The Plainswomen would continue to hang around until Bailee Kendall came in with the score 22 to 21. Kendall had a kill and finished off the game to make the score 25 to 21.
Set Four:
Neither team was willing to concede the point, and the Bruins were down 4 to 5 when the reeled of the next 5 points behind kills from Koelliker, Jillian Campbell and Grasso, who had a sweet push back over the defense and into the back corner. The Plainswomen couldn’t get closer than 3 as the Bruins stepped on the gas. Kendall finished the set strong putting the hammer down once and dumping the ball down to make the score 25 to 16.
Baylie Henrie was named player of the gameas the announcer was impressed by her ability to keep her team balanced and the defense at bay.
The Bruins play next at home against the SLCC alumni on Sept. 21 at 10 a.m.
