In a back-to-back game, anyone on the other team who was hoping that the Bruins would be too tired to play after winning a five set game against #4 Iowa Western Community College was sorely disappointed. The Bruins swept the Barton Cougars in three sets and made it look easy.

Set One:

The Bruins jumped out to a 4 to 1 lead behind the strength of Hannah Wade, Carol Grasso and Bailee Kendall. The Cougars made it 4 to 3, but it didn’t get any closer as the Bruins took the lead to seven including three aces at 11 to 4. The score was never close after that as the Bruins took the set 25 to 14.

Set Two:

Set two was more of the same as the Bruins aced their way to a 6 to 0 lead behind the service of Grasso and her two aces. Jillian Campbell made the most of her playing time, and Kendall delivered her potent offense and defense. The game ended with Lizzie Reich hitting a crosscourt kill. The score was 25 to 15.

Set Three:

Set three was a little closer as Coach Sue Dulaney looked to rest her usual starters in light if the upcoming games on Saturday. Grasso and Reich fueled the attack that kept the Bruins in it during the first part of the set. During a long rally, Grass got two hits in before finally finishing the play of with a kill. The score was 8 to 7 at that point.

The Cougars tied the score at 8, and never saw another tie though they kept it within three until Campbell pounded a ball home and blocked a ball at the net. Abby Pomrenke also contributed a block. The score was 17 to 12. The score at the end of the set was 25 to 15.

The announcer for the Pizza Hut Invitational named Grasso as player of the game for her offense.

Saturday, Sept. 14, SLCC will face Casper College at 9 a.m. and Northeastern JC at 11 a.m. in another set of back to backs. Watch then online at www.njcaatv.com/gonjc
