Salt Lake Community College’s Women’s Volleyball team takes their first game at the Pizza Hut Invitational in 5 sets defeating 4th ranked Iowa Western Community College.
Set One:
In the first set, the two teams were tied up at 13 when a Bailee Kendall kill started a three point run that included a Sequoia Lofton ace and kills by Carol Grasso and Janessa Koelliker. A service error and Iowa’s ability to overcome SLCC’s defense brought the Reivers to within one at 17 to 16. Grasso, Kendall and Koelliker led the bruins to a 25 to 20 win.
Set Two:
The teams were tied at 8 when Friday the 13th struck the Bruins. A hit off a retracted backboard and what looked to a bad call threw the team off track. The score was 12 to 21 when the Bruins decided to bear down. Iowa’s own bad luck helped the Bruins get to within 2. Unfortunately, that was at 22 to 24 with the Reivers getting the win at 22 to 25.
Set Three:
The set was tied at 15 when the Bruins called up a block party with Grasso and Sequoia Lofton stuffing the Reivers. Grasso also had a kill, a tip and ended the set with an ace at 25 to 17.
Set Four:
The Bruins looked to run away with the set early as they sprinted out to a 12 to 6 lead, but the Reivers had other ideas. The score was tied at 14 on a misplay by Indigo Allen. From there, the Reivers ran off 7 points making the score 14 to 21. Grasso tried to stop the bleeding two points and an ace and the Salt Lake defense helped with a couple of blocks to make the score 20 to 23. It was too little, too late as the Reivers put the game away at 21 to 25.
Set Five:
The deciding set 5 is played to 15 points, and teams must win by two. The teams were tied at 5 when the Reivers reeled off 4 points – 2 coming when the ball hit the retracted backboard and the ceiling. Koelliker had a tip back to make it 6 to 9, but a service error gave the next point to Iowa.
The Reivers were up when Hannah Wade blocked the ball to make the score 10 to 13. The score was tied at 13 after a Kendall block and two miscues by the Reivers. Another Kendall block put the Bruins ahead at game point – 14 to 13. The Reivers tied the score at 14, but the Bruins scored the next 2 points and finished the game 16 to 14 on a Kendall kill.
Next up are the Barton Cougars in a back to back.
