New courses offer a path to quickly fill language credit

This summer, the SLCC Humanities, Language and Culture Department is offering an experimental set of language immersion classes designed to help students get a year’s worth of language instruction in 12 weeks.

SLCC will offer classes in Spanish, Chinese and French. Each language class will run about three and a half hours per day. Students will take two courses for a total of 10 credit hours, and will save over $1300 off comparable tuition at a 4-year school.

For more information and for help with registration, contact Cherie Lindhardt at 801-957-4338.

“This is a great opportunity for students to ‘Step Ahead’ during the summer, satisfying their AA requirement and getting them halfway to their BA requirement,” said Paul C. Allen, department chair of Humanities, Language and Culture.

The language credits earned during the summer course are directly transferable to the University of Utah (U of U), and current SLCC and U of U students are eligible to enroll.

Students need to be prepared for an entire year’s worth of instruction condensed into one semester.

“Students need to be super dedicated and may want to consider taking this language course as their only classes for summer semester,” said Cherie Lindhardt, administrative assistant for Humanities, Language and Culture.

The Spanish and Chinese classes will be held Monday through Thursday at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus. The Spanish course will run from 9:45 a.m. to 1:10 p.m., and the Chinese class will run from 5:30 to 8:55 p.m.

The French class will be held at South City Campus Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 8:55 p.m.

The first part of the language course runs from May 20 through June 28, and the second part runs from July 1 through Aug. 10. The registration deadline for the first part of the language course is May 20.
