Super Bowl Sunday rivals Thanksgiving Day as the biggest food consumption day in America.

  • With an estimated 111 million viewers, last year’s Super Bowl XLV was the highest rated television program in American history.
  • Second on the all-time highest rated television program list is Super Bowl XLIV played between the Colts and the Saints.

According to yummly.com, Americans will consume ninety million pounds of chicken wings on Sunday as the New England Patriots face the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

“My favorite Super Bowl food is a cheese ball that my family has every year,” says Christina Smith, SLCC student.

According to the California Avocado Commission, Americans will eat an estimated 40 million pounds of avocados during Super Bowl related activities, most of it as guacamole.

“My favorite dish is a classic 7-layer dip with beans, sour cream, guacamole, tomatoes, cheese, olives and onions – delicious,” says SLCC Student Ben Jordan.

According to yummly.com, Americans will consume 8 million pounds of popcorn during the Super Bowl. Yummly.com also states that Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest day for grilling in America each year.

Pizza, chicken wings and sandwiches are mentioned as the most popular takeout and delivery items during Super Bowl Sunday.

Post-game remorse

Caution is advised for the morning after Super Bowl Sunday.

According to 7-Eleven stores, there is a 20 percent increase in the sale of antacids on the day after the Super Bowl and six percent of all American workers call in sick the day after the Super Bowl.

The average American Super Bowl viewer will consume 1200 calories while watching the big game.

According to About.com only 5 percent of Super Bowl watchers will view the game alone and the average Super Bowl Party will have 17 people.

So whether you are watching the Super Bowl for the commercials, the halftime show or the actual game, chances are you will be feasting like it’s Thanksgiving Day.

Enjoy the game and the food.
