Graduation at SLCC is fast approaching

Graduation. It’s what all students dream will happen this semester, but what only a fraction of students will experience. With graduation looming Thursday of next week, the keynote speaker and graduates of excellence will form a new take on the organization of commencement.

Morgan Spurlock, the man who wrote and starred in Super Size Me, a film about the daunting effects of McDonald’s food on the human body, will address SLCC graduates as the keynote speaker.

Spurlock is an award winning writer, director and producer. He has won honors at the Sundance and Edinburgh Film Festivals. Super Size Me, his first feature film has played in over 100 countries and also in the government sector to push for changes in the food industry and at schools.

With other films like Where in the World is Osama bin Laden? and POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, SLCC graduates will be provided with a qualified speaker who’s no amateur to the stage.

This year’s graduation will shift gears and not provide a student speaker. Instead, nine graduates of excellence will be represented through a slide show presentation.

These students will be honored according to SLCC’s website:

“Based on academic excellence, participation and leadership in SLCC student organizations, participation and leadership in service learning opportunities and in community service, notable contributions to volunteerism, and notable personal achievements, these selected students will be recognized during Commencement for their outstanding accomplishments at Salt Lake Community College.”

These students include, Regan Coplan (AS General Studies), Kathryn Conrow (AAS Marketing Management), Jackie Kimball (AAS Barbering/Cosmetology), Kenan Karalic (Certificate Medical Assistant), Jeffrey Scott (Nursing & AS in Health Science), Vu Anh Nguyen (AS Biology), Daniel Jordan Miller (AA International Studies), Liuaki Vakapuna (AS Criminal Justice and General Studies), and Nadja Wanamaker (Certificate Fashion Design).
