For some students, picking a major that works for them can be like trying to find a Skittle in a bowl full of M&M’s. Fortunately for SLCC students there will be a Career and Major Fair on Sept. 29, held in the Student Activities Center at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“You can go on the internet, talk to employers and do many different things, but [the Career and Major Fair] is a good way to get as much information as possible at once,” said LuAnn Furner, an Academic and Career Advisor at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus.
The Career and Major Fair will feature informational tables from over 60 majors and career choices including: cosmetology, esthetics, communications, and many others. There will also be representatives from various related clubs and organizations.
Faculty from each major will be present as well as student representatives from each major to answer any questions students might have about a particular career choice or major.
Along with informational tables, there will be activities, pizza and popcorn, and even a full tuition waiver given away for the Spring 2011 semester, as well as a few smaller prizes while supplies last.
“We’re trying to make [the Career and Major Fair] really interactive so that students will want to get involved,” said Furner. “It’s important that students know what their options are.”
The esthetics table will feature hand massages, make up tips, facial skin evaluations and will be giving away small prizes. Cosmetology will have video tutorials on taking care of your hair and will have hair braiding.
The Utah Highway Patrol will have a table with “beer goggles” for students to wear that will simulate the change of vision when intoxicated with alcohol at various levels of intoxication.
MCC Radio will also be broadcasting live during the Career and Major Fair, on http://radio.slcc.edu.
Students that have classes at different campuses other than the Taylorsville Redwood Campus are encouraged to attend the Career and Major Fair.
The Career and Major Fair on Sept. 29 is a great way to find information about all of the majors and career training SLCC has to offer. Any questions about the upcoming Career and Major Fair or about different majors and career training options can be answered in any of the Academic Advising Centers at any of the SLCC campuses.
