Curb indecision in a major way

Picking a major, whether fresh out of high school or not, can be a very difficult task for any college student. Academic Advising is here for those students that aren’t sure what they want to do after they end their college career and start their real one. Career Clues, held at the Taylorsville Redwood campus is another great way to help decide on a major, as well as a few other online resources that aren’t affiliated with SLCC.

Academic Advising has a location on all major campuses including Taylorsville Redwood Campus and the South City Campus.

Along with career exploration, Academic Advising also helps students choose general education courses, degree evaluation, degree paths, transfer information as well as having a testing center.

The testing center in Academic Advising is a place where students can take the placement tests needed to determine what math and English classes to start out with. There are workshops held at SLCC to help students prepare for placement tests. A list of websites that help students prepare for placement tests is also available at Academic Advising, in case a workshop cannot be attended.

If a student already knows what path they want to take in college but still wants help picking out classes, there is an advisor assigned to every major; a list of those majors and advisors can be found online at slcc.edu/academicadvising/staff.asp.

Career Clues is an activity done at the Taylorsville Redwood campus that allows students to talk about their interests and abilities with an advisor. This can be done in a group or a one-on-one setting and is always free.

Utahfutures.org is a website that allows students, or any curious party, to find out what the job market is like in Utah for any given career from acting to construction. Students can take interest inventory tests at Utahfutures.org as well as information about training and education.

Academic Advising is a great place for students to get help on choosing a career path. While students can leave their major as General Education, it is advised that a major is picked within one to two semesters to save money and time. Career Clues is a great way to diminish some of the stress and indecision of choosing a major and Utahfutures.org will help put things in perspective with choosing a career.
