If you are feeling stressed or worried that you may have caught something at that party last weekend, The Health and Wellness Center in the basement of the Student Center at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus can help. The Health and Wellness Center offers a wide variety of affordable services for students in need.
“It’s an excellent facility that is unused by the students on campus,” said Andrea Egbert, a former student and social worker. “So many wonderful resources are available to students to help them be successful.”
One of the services offered is counseling. Students can arrange to see a counselor on a wide variety of problems. The counselors are highly trained professionals who are trained to handle anything. The first session is free and $10 for each session thereafter.
“When you’re at such a crucial time in your life why not get free counseling?” said Egbert.
For those in need of a more personal touch, the Health and Wellness Center offers three free massages per semester to students. A licensed massage therapist is on staff to completely melt away stress from the student populace.
“It’s equal to what you’d get outside of campus [in quality],” said Lorrin Colby, SLCC student and frequent massage patient.
The medical clinic is another inexpensive service the Health and Wellness Center offers. New patients can visit the nurse practitioner at no charge, with a $10 charge for each additional visit. The center is equipped to handle immunizations, examinations and testing, as well as a wide variety of other non-emergency health problems, like cuts and scrapes.
The Health and Wellness Center also offers a variety of health promotion services, all of which at little or no cost to the students. These include smoking cessation classes, sexual health classes and stress management. Students can become more informed on how to properly address their problems and become healthier and happier during their time at SLCC.
“We do a lot of good things,” said Sandy Helm, the Health and Wellness Center’s secretary. “Simply the best department on campus.”
