Figuring out which math class to take can be complicated, especially if a student is just starting out at college.
There are many math resources at Salt Lake Community College, including its Math Placement Guide, the Student Math League, and the Dumke Center for STEM Learning and Math Success.
The Math Success Center provides all students with Math Workshop Schedules, SLCC Math Pathways, Companion Courses, and STEM success mentors to assist students who want to find the best academic program that best fits their program of study.
“The Math Success Center helps me to know my weaknesses in math and to set my personal goals for college success,” says Lan Nguyen, a third-semester student from Vietnam.
The Math Success Center offers two options: considering the Math Success Courses or remaining in your current class. The Math Success Courses care about students’ success to work at their own pace and closely with an instructor. Also, it allows up to two semesters to finish a course. However, the center has some suggestions on improving student performance when students choose to remain in their current class.
The suggestions are to meet with an instructor, to review the MATH SUCCESS website, and to engage with STEM Learning Resources like tutoring and workshops.
“As the Math Pathways, I am in MATH 0980 now, and then I am going to register MATH 1010 for my major requirement,” says Nicole Maloney, a second-semester Computer Sciences major.
The chart of the Math Pathways gives useful information about the math courses to all SLCC students for college success.
For example, if a student’s major is Social and Health Sciences, MATH 1040 should be learned as a College Math after Developmental Math courses, such as MATH 0980. Although the information on the Math Pathways does not work with all required program-specific math courses, it does helps students to figure out which math class is needed depending on their degree.
“I recommend the Math Success Center to students that need to review fundamental concepts in math and can work at their own pace,” says Sandra Garcia-Sanchez, an advisor for the School of Science, Mathematics & Engineering.
“In addition, I like the facts that an instructor is working with the student and the student can reflect in what already know and what is needed to review and learn,” Garcia-Sanchez adds.
The Math Success Center is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It is centrally located in the Markosian Library’s lower level on the Taylorsville campus.
