It’s that time of year again, where we spook ourselves with the mystery of the unknown. Halloween is upon us and people cannot get enough scares. This is the prime season for horror films, so here are some of the scariest must-watch movies for those who enjoy the genre.

“Get Out”

This is a relatively new film that was well-received by critics and currently holds a 99 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The story follows a young interracial couple who visit the woman’s parents and discovers a secret where older white people steal the lives of young adults.

“The Blair Witch Project”

This found-footage horror flick made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999. The movie follows a group of film students trying to document an alleged witch in the woods of Maryland.

“Halloween” (1978)

To many fans and critics, this film by John Carpenter set the standard for slasher films. Michael Myers murders his sister in the fictional town of Haddonfield on Halloween night. After being placed in a sanitarium, he escapes and returns home to continue his killing spree.

“The Silence Of The Lambs”

In this thriller, an FBI agent is assigned to interview Hannibal Lecter, a psychiatrist and incarcerated serial killer, whom she believes will help her pursue Buffalo Bill, another serial killer on the loose.

“The Exorcist” (1973)

This was the first horror movie to be nominated for Best Picture by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The plot centers around a 12-year-old girl who succumbs to the hand of Satan, which forces her mother to call on two priests to try and save her.

“The Shining”

An adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 novel, Jack Torrance is a writer who becomes a seasonal caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. The hotel has a brutal backstory, and Jack’s mental state begins to decline from the supernatural forces that inhabit the building.

“IT” (2017)

Another Stephen King adaptation follows a group of young friends who go on a mission to look for lost children, including the brother of one of the boys. (Review)

“The Conjuring”

Set in 1971, Roger and Carolyn Perron and their five daughters move into a haunted farmhouse. The family experiences paranormal events within the first few nights.

“Annabelle: Creation”

This spin-off of “The Conjuring” tells of a puppeteer and his wife who grieve the loss of their seven-year-old daughter. The couple believe the girl’s spirit can be transfer to a porcelain doll, but things take a different course.

“Sinister”

In this movie produced by Jason Blum, who is also known for “Paranormal Activity” and “Insidious,” crime author Ellison Oswalt becomes obsessed with solving killings captured on old films that were stored in his attic. The mystery and suspense deepens when his own family is put in danger.
