This semester has come to a colorful end by way of an interview with the ever-cheerful Rebecca Schumann. I’ve analyzed so many different looks this semester, and Rebecca’s has made it just in time for this last article. Being recommended for the Student LookBook by e-mail, her friend caught me as I was preparing to write the article for this issue. Having never met Rebecca, I took the word of a fellow reader and SLCC student and his suggestions. I am definitely on the same page with Rebecca’s friend and she was a great addition to my collection of looks.
Rebecca’s style is very playful and she loves emphasizing the small details. Her interview outfit was all about purple, zebra, and big flowers. A zebra jacket, purse and pumps may be too much for some, but Rebecca made it work.
Shoes are Rebecca’s “thing.” She has more than 200 pairs and recently donated 50 pairs to charity. She has it figured out that each pair can be worn twice a year. Rebecca says, “clothes may not fit at times, but shoes always fit.” She says that she can always begin mapping out an outfit with shoes and everything else will fall into place. When more than 200 pairs of shoes aren’t enough, Rebecca tells me she has 31 handbags; one for each day of the month.
With summer almost here, Rebecca left me with some great summer style suggestions. She says that girls should be on the lookout for lightweight leather, pastel colors, wedges, white skirts and a great purse (naturally). She says it’s great to have an exciting purse that will get a lot of attention. Rebecca recommends Bermuda shorts and summer scarves for men and women, a great suggestion.
Both Rebecca and I understand that this whole wardrobe scenario can be overwhelming. For a timid starter, we recommend that they begin by focusing on one detail then try to build up to a grander scale of more elaborate style choices. Even a splash of the right perfume can go a long way. It can improve an entire look by adding that extra sense. Rebecca says that it “can depend on the weather” when it comes to choosing a fragrance. It can also depend on an event that one may be attending or a job that one has.
After a great semester of style tips and experiences, it’s a wonder how one can remember everything. Remember that rules of fashion are only there to set social standards; they can always be altered or broken (that’s the fun part.) Summer is a great time to try new things because school is out (for most) and you have a little extra cash flow. The most important thing about style is that it’s comfortable and looks great. It’s evident when something is working, and when it’s not. If you ever need a nudge, just look back at the LookBook and hopefully it can take some effect.
