Conversation Club fosters fluency, friendships

International Student Affairs and the Academic Literacy Center are using language to bring students together.

Conversation Club aims to provide a fun, casual setting where Salt Lake Community College students can improve their English skills and make new friends. Students of every language and skill level are welcome to attend.

Conversation Club recently started its second year earlier this week. And while club meetings focus on helping ESL students, event organizer Bethany Bibbs says all SLCC students are encouraged to participate.

“We are excited to [continue] Conversation Club and look forward to seeing new and returning students,” she adds.

Club meetings will have a variety of conversation topics and activities each week that are meant to be important and fun, including icebreakers to help students feel more comfortable. Tutors will also be present in partnership with the ESL instructors at South City Campus.

Conversation Club will be held Mondays from noon to 1 p.m. in room 2-182 at the South City Campus and Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. in room STC 219 at the Taylorsville Redwood Campus.

Anyone interested in attending Conversation Club meetings are encouraged to sign up in advance so event organizers can get an accurate count for refreshments.

Contact the Academic Literacy Center or International Student Affairs for more information.
