Have you ever thought about what it might be to be a Globe writer? Well this spring at Salt Lake Community College I had the opportunity to be the sports writer for the The Globe newspaper, and what an experience it has been.
I had the opportunity to write about what I’m passionate about, which is sports. Trust me, if you would of asked me a few years back if I would ever consider writing, I would have told you no, that is not for me. Well look at me now, I’m a sports writer.
If you haven’t had a chance to read some of the stories online, from not only myself but all of the other great writers here at The Globe, then you are missing out. This spring I was able to cover the men’s and women’s basketball team, including having had the chance to sit down with the women’s head coach and do an interview with her, which was outstanding.
Then I had the opportunity to cover men’s baseball and women’s softball who both have a chance at a championship this month.
One of my favorite stories I wrote this spring was on former SLCC student, Eddy Alvarez, who took a chance and made his way to London to compete in the Winter Olympics, plus making the front page of the newspaper was awesome as well.
Another story I wrote this spring was how Sports Rally, a club here at SLCC, has brought tackle football — yes, tackle football — to SLCC. Who would have thought that was possible? Jesse Valdez is the president and founder of Sports Rally and the main reason why SLCC has tackle football.
I had great editors all semester and great people at The Globe who are always encouraging, and who want to see you not only succeed in school, but want you to succeed in the world of journalism.
What are you waiting for? Come and join the SLCC’s Globe staff for the fall semester. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
